The farther from the valve the lower the readings will be giving an average of the four cylinders in each bank. This keeps the ability to gather the necessary temperature information simple and less expensive.
If you require more exact temperature readings of each cylinder you may consider installation of probes near each of the combustion chambers exhaust valve. This installation is more complicated and requires the distant of the EGT probes from the exhaust valves to be consistent keeping the variation in temperature to as little as possible.
The constancy in probe distance from combustion chamber will insure even and reliable readings. An advantage of the EGT monitoring verses monitoring the cylinder head temperature is a more immediate response to change in temperature. The change in cylinder head take a much longer time since it has a lot more mass to heat.
The peak or point of maximum temperature is the basic reference for performance management. Tuning for specific atmospheric conditions can be critical on race day. The peak temperature in each cylinder will vary with different power settings, changes in altitude, and ambient temperature. The easiest place for me to fix the gap was between the intake manifold and the head. Like I said before, the easiest solution is to simply drill and tap the exhaust manifold.
I've since picked up another 2 diesels, and another 3 manifolds, and knowing what I know now, I probably would have just taken the easy way out. I'm in the same boat with the 83' setup, though I'll be running a front mount intercooler shortly, so the offset from a spacer wouldn't be an issue. Seeing as the 4d55 heads are not crossflow the exhaust and intake are on the same sideI've considered making a phenolic spacer for the intake manifold to help insulate it from the exhaust heat.
Probably not worth the effort, but it'd be an inexpensive project that arguably helps reduce intake temperature and could have the added benefit of offsetting the intake to match a spaced out turbo. For now I'm going to just drill out the exhaust manifold at location C if I can fit my drill in there, otherwise it'll go in A. EGT sensor on a turbo goes before the turbo. Can you install a wideband into the exhaust pipe or use a 5 gas emission analyzer if you have access to it? An EGT is going to give some relative change as it gets richer and leaner but you won't get much insight into how it's burning beyond that.

The egt sensor I was planned to use is a mainline EGT sensor with cold junction calibrated guage. I have not considered a gas analyzer so far. Would I run into the same issues that I would with lambada? Also I'm not sure how much the things I was told about lambada use in 2 stroke are true or not. You can put the thermocouple as close as you can access. The temperature range on that sensor you listed is way hotter than your engine is going to get. For example, a modern turbo direct injection engine will run around C before the turbo.
If you have a target temperature it's going to be more useful. A gas analyzer is absolutely going to give you the useful readings, but they are not going to measure quickly in fast transients. Thanks, Ben. Well, think about this I'd think I'd want an exhaust temperature probe mounted before the turbine blades, so you know how hot the gases are that are hitting the blades while the exhaust gas is under temperature and pressure.

TDI s : 99 beetle and 04 jetta. People with post-turbo EGT say "just add degrees to it and you have pre-turbo temp" This is not true at all, and less true at higher power levels where it matters most, because: The turbo removes energy heat from the exhaust gas to spin the compressor wheel.
At higher power levels there is more boost, and more EGT, and more energy required to spin the compressor, because as a turbine gets closer to its max capacity "choke" it becomes less and less efficient. This means it needs more energy heat from the exhaust per psi of boost as it gets closer to its limit. While the "add degrees" thumbrule might work ok at steady state lower power levels, who cares about what EGT is at idle or light load, I care about EGT when it's pushing the limit so I know when to back off.
The trouble is, the turbine might require or degrees worth of energy to make the higher boost, which makes the "add degrees" thumbrule a dangerous oversimplification. Thanks to all, for the replies. The point of a pyro is to know whether or not you are about melt the pistons or not. The purpose of a turbo is to convert heat energy in the exhaust gas into compression forces on the compressor side. It sucks heat out of the exhaust gas. Forward or after the turbo is acceptable but you will read to degrees lower for hotrodders with chips I would agree pre turbo but for a stock work truck or tower after turbo. All class 8 trucks come from the factory with the pyro post turbo whether it is Cummins, Cat, Detroit or Mercedes.
Jim OAug 1, Turbo engines, it is the preferable the probe in front of the turbo inlet for higher accuracy and sensitivity. The short cast iron section of exhaust manifold and the first section of thin-walled pipe are other areas.
Regarding non-turbo engines, the long exhaust runner is most accessible. The next area for consideration is the upper section of the exhaust manifold collector. The probe should be installed in the exhaust manifold closest to the exhaust outlet at the head this is the closest physical location to the exhaust valve. EGT probe placement close to the exhaust valve isn't always easy.
If you don't have a turbocharged engine, the exhaust manifold can be drilled and tapped while remaining on the engine.
However, doing this on a turbo engine without removing the manifold is not recommended and can potentially cause failure of the turbine from drill fragments getting into the turbine. Drilling a hole in the thin-walled exhaust tube using a clamp style EGT probe fitting is the simplest method.
A robust method is a bung welded into place, thus screwing the EGT thermocouple adapter into the bung. Stainless steel adapters are preferable and much better than brass.
They withstand higher temperatures, temperature cycling, better anti-corrosion and structural stresses occurring in exhaust systems. Diesel engine applications use long primary extractors. Placement of the EGT probe on a runner close to the head depends on your particular application. It is your decision to detect the temperature of the exhaust gases at the collector or just one cylinder. General use applications require one EGT probe per cylinder bank installed either near the head exhaust valve or at the collector.
The exhaust gas temperature is lower the further from the valve, thus leading to slower and less accuracy in EGT probe readings. However, probe installation further away from the head is typically easier since there is more room from other engine components. Typically EGT probes are installed in different methods. Clamp type installations require a hole drilled just large enough to take the probe, and a large clamp, much similar to a radiator hose clamp, secures it.Cracked vst reddit
This clamp need to be good quality to withstand the high exhaust temperatures, and is often stainless steel. Alternatively, and our preferred approach, is to drill and tap the manifold or headers to accept a compression fitting that holds the probe in place.
This also permits the probe depth to be adjusted, and the assembly removed and hole plugged with appropriate threaded bolt when the EGT probe is no longer required. Weld on bosses may be required on thin walled tubing sections.

If you are after more power, you may need to lower your current exhaust gas temperature to permit increased boost and fuel delivery.
